Ingredients

  • 30 g 1 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves

  • 50 g 1/6 cup coarse sea salt

Equipment

  • Blender
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Airtight container

Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 200°F (about 90°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  • Remove the basil leaves from the stems and spread them evenly on the prepared baking sheet. Place them in the oven and bake for about 5-7 minutes until the leaves are dry to the touch but not browned. Remove from the oven and let them cool completely.
  • In a food processor or blender, combine the dried basil leaves and coarse sea salt. Pulse several times until the basil leaves are finely chopped and well incorporated into the salt. The mixture should be slightly green and aromatic.
  • Transfer the basil salt to an airtight container. It can be stored at room temperature for up to 1 month, or longer in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Ensure the basil leaves are completely dry before blending with salt to prevent clumping.

Can I use dried basil from the store instead of fresh basil?

While you can use dried basil, fresh basil provides a more vibrant flavor. If using store-bought dried basil, you may need to adjust the amount since it’s more concentrated.
